Ancient City of Knidos

Κνίδος

Famed for its wine and for Praxiteles’ Aphrodite, Knidos lies on Cape Tekir at the far western end of the Datça peninsula. Because it covered both the mainland and the island section known as Kap Krio, Strabo spoke of a ‘double city’; filling the channel between them produced two harbours, one for warships and one for trade. The streets follow a Hippodamian grid, and on the mountainous ground the city climbs in terraces. The Great Theatre, the Demeter Sanctuary and the Round Temple and Apollo terraces are the main ruins.
