Ancient City of Iasos

Ἴασος

Iasos occupies a peninsula with water on three sides, at Kıyıkışlacık, 28 km from Milas. Legend credits settlers from Argos with its founding, but excavation has dated its earliest settlement to the close of the 3rd millennium BC. Strabo told a story about how much its people loved fish. An Italian mission has been digging here since 1960; the remains include the Roman agora, the bouleuterion and the sanctuaries of Zeus Megistos, Demeter and Kore, and Artemis Astias.
