Labraunda Sanctuary

Λάβραυνδα

No sanctuary in Western Caria mattered more than Labraunda. The oldest pottery from the excavations dates from the middle of the 7th century BC. In the 4th–3rd centuries BC the satraps Maussollos and his brother Idrieus turned it into their family’s shrine, adding the South Propylon, the North Stoa, two large androns, the Oikoi Building and the Temple of Zeus. Visitors from Mylasa (Milas) followed the Sacred Way, a stone-paved road 8 metres wide.
