Çavuştepe Castle (Sardurihinili)

Sardurihinili

Sarduri II, who ruled Urartu in 764–735 BC, built this fortress on two hills about 25 km south-east of Van, where it watches over the Gürpınar plain and the routes across it. Its Urartian name, Sardurihinili, means ‘city of Sardur’. Two ditches cut into the rock defend it. The Upper Castle holds a temple of Haldi, the chief god; the Lower Castle has the palace, stores, workshops, cisterns and a second temple, for Irmushini.
