Hierapolis Kastabala Archaeological Site

Ἱερόπολις Κάσταβαλα

Kastabala, one of the leading cities of Cilicia, lies on a small plain beside the Ceyhan, the ancient Pyramos. People first settled here in the Neolithic, but most of what can be seen today is Roman: a colonnaded street, a vaulted complex, a theatre, baths and aqueducts; the site also has a castle. Artemis Perasia had her cult centre here, and the city is first recorded, as Hierapolis, on coins of the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Since 2021 it has been excavated systematically on the Ministry’s behalf.
