Ancient City of Phaselis

Φάσηλις

Three harbours, the North, the Central or War Harbour and the South, served Phaselis, a port founded on a small peninsula in the 7th century BC. For a long time no port in eastern Lycia was busier. Persian rule ended when the city opened its gates to Alexander the Great. A paved avenue 25 metres wide leads from the South Harbour into the centre, and the gate built for Hadrian’s visit, baths, aqueducts, a monumental fountain and a theatre can still be seen.
